Windows 10 Misses Basic Feature: Ability to Type (Fn-Function Key Broken AGAIN)

Out of morbid curiousity, I decided to install Windows 10 to see if the operating system to end all operating systems would even boot.  It did, to my surprise, boot.  It even showed some pretty pictures.  After trying to log on for 15 minutes using what I knew was my correct password, I had to use the virtual keyboard to log on.  I got in.

Windows 10, just like windows 8 and 7 before it reversed the fn(laptop function) key on my laptop so that I can’t even press the ‘space’ key without pressing function as well.  Also, you can’t type the numbers 1-4 but the rest of the numbers work just fine.  To Microslob’s credit, they did get 6/10 number keys working which is a passing grade.  Yet another sloppy job by Microslob and here is my new computer set up courtesy Microslob:

I was lucky to have a spare keyboard around which does work to type at least.  Today is Aug 6, 2015.  Let’s see how long it takes them to sort this one out.  I imagine it’s going to take a bit of time because the bug report emails are bound to look something like this (as typed on my laptop keyboard):

DearMicrosoft,

Iamwritingtocomplainaboutyourrecentupgrade.Icannolongerpressthespacekeynordoesmykeyboardworkproperlyanymore.

Pleasefix.

Bestregards,

To think that Microslob made the richest man in the world out of Bill Gates.  Hey Bill:  “Can you spare a few billion to produce an operating system that doesn’t frustrate and annoy the entire planet?  Perhaps that could be a project of the Gates Foundation?”

  1. It seems to me it’s a driver problem. The synaptics touchpad driver with Win10 is not working for my older toshiba laptop (C675). I uninstalled it from the Control Panel and I’m back in business. My FN key is no longer reversed.

  2. 5 have the sa0e *r6b3e0 6n 0y verbat50 2eyb6ard.
i have the same problem on my verbatim keyboard.
i type slower than a drunk 5 year old because im trying to determine when to press the Fn key.

  3. Function problem solved on
Verbatim Mini Wireless Slim Keyboard and Mouse [97472]

Press and hold Fn key (function key, bottom left) and press the Insert/NumLK (upper right)
This is the Fn SUBFUNCTION of turning on and off the numbers lock (not the caps lock, but NUMBERS lock which is the problem)

The one thing I dislike about the laptop specific keyboards I have been receiving recently is the function of the number lock usually comes on when starting up the laptop. This means you have to remember to turn it off first thing or when you use the U, I, O, P, J, K, L or M keys you will actually be typing in numbers.

You simply have to hold the blue Fn key and press the NumLk key to turn of the key pad numbers and turn your keyboard into a full qwerty keyboard. This is the one feature I wish would be turned off as a default when turning on your computer but it is not that big a deal, something you will get used to easily.

  4. Do the updates, make sure your bios is updated. You should be ok. Google your specific model and “windows 10 keyboard” there are a lot of model specific fixes.
