SlutWalk: Statistics on Rape and Provocative Behaviour

TVO’s The Agenda ran a show about SlutWalk.  This is a march/protest dedicated to reclaiming the word ‘slut’ and thus preventing it from being used as an excuse for rape.

The comment stems from a misstep made by Toronto Police at a York University at a Campus Safety Information Session.  An officer suggested that women not dress like ‘sluts’ in order to reduce their chances of being the victim of rape.

I was interested to learn if there were any studies regarding the incidence of rape and the manner of attire or provocative behaviour of the victims.  Indeed there are.

A Federal Commission on Crime of Violence Study found that only 4.4% of all reported
rapes involved provocative behavior on the part of the victim. In murder cases 22%
involved such behavior (as simple as a glance).
