Mitochondrial Dysfunction likely at Root of All Cancers

Mitochondrial Dysfunction likely at Root of All Cancers

mitochondriafigure1

Since the 1930’s and the Nobel Prize winning (yet since forgotten) work of Otto Warburg, it has been known that cancer is a metabolic disorder.  Famously, Warburg stated:

“Deprive a cell 35% of its oxygen for 48 hours and it may become cancerous.”
— Otto Warburg

If we’re to discuss metabolism, especially oxygen metabolism, we need to introduce readers to an often overlooked organelle (cellular organ) called the mitochondria.  Many people are unaware of a ‘cellular turbocharger’ that makes our cells orders of magnitude more energy efficient than the simple protozoans (amoeaba) we studied in high school Biology.

It was long known (thought) that the mitochondria in the case of cancer were either dead or dormant.  In 2008, Dr. Evangelos Michelakis at the University of Alberta ‘woke them up’ using DCA (dichloroacetic acid).  This led to stunning reductions in tumour sizes in mice.  Ironically it lead to a equally stunning yet deafening silence from the research community.  (DCA is not patentable and thus does not jive with the modern pharmaceutical model).

It’s important to note that the mitochondria, not the cellular nucleus determines when it is appropriate to undergo apoptosis — programmed cell death in the case of errors (cancer).  The thinking with DCA is that it woke up the dormant mitochondria which then were able to effect apoptosis, killing the cancerous cells.

Since then some evidence of mitochondrial toxins helping in certain cancers has made this narrative incomplete.  For example, at the moment in Brazil, there are court proceedings to gain access to a promising cancer treatment: phosphoethanolamine.  This chemical is not a mitochondrial promoter but a mitochondrial toxin.  A similar (by action) drug called Meclizine (a common anti nausea medication) causes an accumulation of phosphoethanolamine, preventing mitochondrial function.

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/24142790

In addition, in Leukemias, mitochondrial toxins are used to bring some cancers under control.

http://www.cell.com/cancer-cell/abstract/S1535-6108(11)00398-9

To complicate matters further, mitochondrial toxins are also causitive of cancers.  A good example of this is mercury.

So what is going on?  It would appear that mitochondrial dysfunction rather than atrophy or death is causative of cancer.  Depending on the type of dysfunction, some mitochondrial poisons may assist in ending the dysfunction fueling the cancer.

It is likely that we will have to come to think of mitochondria in our cells as we think of bacteria in our stomach.  We must think of it as a population to be nurtured and fostered.  The fact that mitochondrial toxins are effective in some cases against cancers should not lead to the idea that diminished mitochondrial health leads to increased cancer resistance.  In fact, quite the opposite, it seems that keeping our mitochondria healthy confers the best chances at cancer avoidance and general health.

A review of the ‘big four’ mitochondrial supplements:

l-carnitine

alpha lipoic acid

CoQ10

d-ribose

demonstrates benefits in the case of cancer.  These benefits are largely anecdotal and centered around decreasing fatigue in patients.  Alpha lipoic acid shows the strongest benefit to date:

How the Little Known Nutrient Alpha Lipoic Acid Kills Cancer Cells and Outperforms Chemotherapy

(CoQ10 has warnings against use in active, fast growing cancers).

Clearly more research needs to be done, but it seems that mitochondrial health is integral to cancer resistance.

  1. Hello Martin,
Check out GcMaf……as I understand it is a “transport protein” which speeds or restores the proper effectiveness of vitamin D in jump starting the immune system and repairing the healthy function of the mitochondria amongst other benefits. I understand that this protein is having amazing success with late stage cancers as well as other illnesses…..autism being just one. Dr. Jeff Bradstreet, one of the many doctors found dead or missing recently, was doing a lot of research with GcMaf. You can read about GcMaf and also purchase it here: http://www.cytoinnovations.com/ …… it looks like they are now calling it VDTP (vitamin D transport protien). There are additional links on their site that you might find interesting also.
I often wonder how your DCA petition is progressing while I continue to stew about the state of our health system. I recently signed up as a member of the “Canadian Anti-Corruption League” where one of the founders, Mr. Royce Hamer writes “I have accused Health Canada of being a totally corrupt government agency when in fact it is an agency of the drug manufacturers. They are the only government agency that has a book published with intimate details focusing on their corrupt ways and disregard for the Canadians that they are charged with protecting. The book is “Corrupt to the Core” and written by one of the most honourable of scientists by the name of Chiv Chopra.” Mr. Hamer has also written that he believes that Health Canada should be sued for their corrupt ways and I would be very happy to see this happen.
I don’t have a lot of time to spend with these issues but I do so often enjoy your blog posts and hope that you will continue to shine light upon the terrible state of our healthcare system.

  2. About the gcmaf, ive found several places that sell it. Personally, id want to track with nagalese testing to verify it was necessary and to see its effectiveness. If I could afford it, id try it in a heartbeat. Ive read you take it 6 weeks on 2 weeks off.

  3. You know, when I first started covering DCA in 2008, there were about 4 or so other compounds in a similar boat. Ie, there were about 4 compounds that were extremely promising but not patentable. Now the list is quite extensive. I’d hesitate to draw one up for risk of missing one but:
    3-bromopyruvate
    DCA
    High Dose IV Vitamin C
    B17 – Laetrile
    GcMAF
    Phosphoethanolamine
    Cannabis
    Bariatric (Oxygen) Treatments…
I’m not suggesting everyone abandon their Oncologists and run out and try these. I’m saying the number of promising treatments that are not patentable is an ever growing list.

  4. what a great reply Martin, I have been taking dca on and off for years and for years it was the greatest thing since sliced bread, maybe even greater but now ive gotten a bit of neuropathy and it seems to affect it so i try hard not to take the dca any more so im looking for something else, something affordable like the dca. hormonaly fed is extra problematic. Have you looked into a high frequency generator http://www.thegb4000.com/?

  5. No, I haven’t seen the high frequency generator, I’ll take a look. Best of health. I take it you’ve researched the supplements to limit neuropathy. B12 is one of the main ones, there are others.

  6. yea thanks i was taking b12 with folic acid and b6, but while folate is good folic acid (the synthetic version) is not so good for my problem so I am researching a new b12 but I hadnt realized it helped with neuropathy, i take r alpha limpoic acid and benfotiamine. Thanks for your information. I will look forward to your thoughts in the high frequency generator (rife) machine

  7. For b12, I’m a personal believer and consumer of liposomal b12. For me, it’s the only b12 that is absorbed in sufficient quantity. As for your folate supplement, try 5-lmthf the activated form of folic acid. Many of us with chronic illness have an mthfr mutation which makes it impossible or difficult to process traditional folic acid. Look for supplements containing 5-mthf (the activated form of folic acid).

  8. I have 645 confirmed signatories. When I get to 1000, I will start deciding what to do with it.

  9. Hmm maybe a bit off topic but ssris are not a good idea for bipolar as discovered because they can and do increase mania. So a depressed person prescribed an ssri for depression but might have an undiagnosed bipolar disorder and in turn get mania and do all those things that we try to avoid in bipolars. As an added bonus, some of those people are likely to get cancer from the ssris.

  10. I am fortunate not to suffer from bipolar disorder which unfortunately qualified me for life on Effexor. I haven’t heard hard evidence for a link with SSRI’s and cancer, but living the after effects of this drug, with so many of my body’s systems screwed up, I can imagine that it’s plausible.

  11. Just google paxil and breast cancer theres tons of articles
not sure why they dont show under ssri cancer . As a side note, I am currently researching nutrition and mental health. With your writing and research skills, I am guessing you have looked into this topic as well. With upwards of 70% of our prison population mentally ill, it would be amazing to give even just 1 person a life free of mental health issues and without having to take any ssris etc. fyi, I used essential oils for my “depression” and they worked. Specifically, joy and inspiration from young living.. was told it had to do with sesqueterpines as to why those blended oils helped. I was told for years that I was “unipolor” and I was treated with paxil and wellbutrin to name a few. Three weeks after starting the paxil I walked out of my home and did not return. Within a month of stopping paxil I returned to work missing 6 years of my life. Im guessing im bipolar and per the new criterea in the dsm 5 i am. But it was my sons case that moved me. He has bipolar with psychotic features. I will seek to find non harmful ways to help him as long as I am alive. I am wondering if the gcmaf mite not help you both. It couldnt hurt. Peace and Blessings to you Martin, keep writing! I love your writing and the research you put into each piece.

  12. I’m kind of furious (not with you). You see I had taken years and come up with a regime which fixed my stomach and all my chronic issues. At that point, it was Effexor which was holding back my health. This evil pill has tripped a massive stomach problem and I just can’t get it to stop. In short, hyperacidity and hyperactivity. So I’m not comfortable promoting my solutions if I can’t say they work. Until this stomach problem goes away, if it ever goes away, I’m staying quiet on my regime. I will tell you the facts that let to my regime. I am MTHFR positive. I knew that I had a lot of chronic issues and such people often have MTHFR issues. I have stuff on my blog, feel free to search. I also have a gene which blocks vitamin D assimilation and a bunch of genes for Crohn’s and digestive disorders. Just the same, I had them under control. I actually felt well for the first time in ages.
Read up on MTHFR and see if you find any relevance in it. Thanks for the encouragement.

  13. Thank you for this reply, somehow I missed it til now. I feel you. I have no help or suggestion except to offer this: My half sister also has crones and never quite feels right. I just wonder if the gcmaf probiotic would help. It wouldn’t hurt to try. I know she gets her blood run through some sort of process where they remove it and basically filter it and then put it back in her. She raves about the results..until they wear off. I also know of a unique and excellent homeopathic doctor in Seattle. You might be surprised at what homeopathy from the right Dr can do for you. 🙂 Best Wishes and Good Health to you.
email me anytime if you want his info or just in case.

  14. I just read the article you recommended for me about the MTHFR issue. It was a GREAT article and perfect source as well as information that I had not previously found. Thank you VERY much Martin for the suggestion. I have actually concluded that perhaps the recommended vitamin/mineral/etc is way off and for the phytonutirients perhaps in need of more specific additions. Similarly, I have concluded that actual malnutrion may well be behind much *mental* illness. Simple things like eating eggs most every day and a lot more fresh veggies ( this doesn’t have to be painful) could make a huge difference. The Omega 3 connect should not be ignored either and so many other things. All of are far more likely to help long term than pills that reap severe negative side effects like you’ve described and worse. Our culture and those that control it must take some of the responsibility, change is needed. Thank you again for your input.

  15. Also, thank you for this great edition of Rolling Stones Lady Jane. The “Real” lady Jane was a dear friend of mine who passed 20 some years ago from cancer, I was dubbed LadyJane2. I figured my fate and time has granted me the full name of Lady Jane . Thanks again for every thing.

  16. New, 1000x more potent form of DCA, I mentioned to a while back.

Cancer cells need glucose, iron, glutamine to survive and thrive.

The warburg effect maybe only a first order understanding of the complexity of the metabolic
action of cancerous cells. Apparently injecting bicarbonate of soda into tumors can
    also kill them.

The Ketogenic diet has been known for about a decade to retard tumor growth.

See also Dr. Thomas Seyfried’s book ‘Cancer as a Metabolic Disease. He’s from Harvard and in some hotwater
for exposing some of the causation behind cancer cell growth.

  17. I love your comments but that baking soda injection idea caused the death of a woman and the dr that cured at least one lady, killed another so he is in prison atm but the concept definitely warrants research.
I too heard about the more potent dca but no where to buy it?

  18. Well there is some Doctor in italy thats been treating people for while with baking soda injections for 20 years and not killed anyone. He’s an oncologist btw. He only treats terminal patients where the treatments have failed.

    http://www.curenaturalicancro.com/en/sodium-bicarbonate-treatment/

I have no idea where to get this new more powerful form of DCA, ex from the researchers. Its patented so anyone selling it would probably be doing it illegally.

  19. Thanks John for this great information. I can’t get a firm grip on exactly what Mito-DCA is or how it’s better than regular DCA.
