Cogs in a Wheel or Shimmering Patterns of Light?

I was recently watching “Waking Life” which follows a character through his experiences with Lucid Dreaming.  In the movie the protagonist encounters many philosophers who mirror real life philosophers.

One of the issues discussed is the ever present debate of Determinism vs Non-Determinism.  Ie, can everything be predicted or is there free will and chance in the universe?

The philosopher in the following clip is David Sosa:

Here is a ‘retort’ by Michio Kaku:

I was thinking of putting a poll here to ask people what they thought about the issue – specifically asking them if they thought the universe had free will or was purely deterministic?  Then I thought if the universe is purely deterministic we don’t need a poll because we can predict the result.  By contraposition, if we can’t predict the result then the results of the poll would be too uncertain to be of any use.  It was around this point when I gave up on the idea of a poll altogether because I was too confused.  I welcome comments just the same, predictable ones or otherwise.
