There’s no place in the day school system for Tamara
When Warren and Lisa Bernstein went to the Jewish Day Schools to educate their daughter Tamara, who has Down’s Syndrome, they thought they would have no problem. Children with disabilities were once shunted into specialized institutions, but nowadays, some children with learning or developmental disabilities are already handled in the Day Schools. However, the mere mention Down’s Syndrome caused principal after principal to react negatively.

  1. I will wait until I get the printed edition because there is a lot of volume on line.

    However, my initial perspective is that a “speciality school” i.e. not publically funded as in our Ontario’s preferred Public and Roman Catholic schools but religious and particularly Jewish and further particularly Orthodox or another is a bad place for a “special child” because of a brevity of basic resources at all levels and schemes.

    A specialty on a specialty will inevitably be more costly and may even leave the child short changed in terms of acquiring the best resources available as the parents and school cope with limited resources both personal emotional and financial.

    After I read your lengthy piece, I sincerly look forward to seeing my pre-conceived notion over-turned
