Buscopan: An Under Touted Treatment for IBS

I have suffered with IBS off and on for years, often quite miserably.  In all those years of poking, prodding and pills which had little to no effect, there was indeed a pharmaceutical that was available.

I now largely control my IBS herbally and via the use of a potent probiotic called Bio K Plus.

But sometimes, when I’m required to take antibiotics or my stress level gets too high, I get nausea and stomach upset which my regimen can’t compensate for.  Often one Buscopan tablet will quell the outbreak before it gets out of control.  Why no one ever told me about it, and I’ve been to many Gastroenterologists and doctors, I’ll never know.  I found out about it when I saw a brochure for it in my physician’s office when I was there on an unrelated matter.  When I mentioned it to him he said: “yeah, you can try that, but don’t take it consistently.”

By the way, there is no foundation for this advice not to take it consistently that I can find, either from the company itself, nor the official prescribing information.  As it turns out I never need to take it for more than a short spell at a time.  Buscopan is a very old antispasmodic and has a good track record.  If you suffer from cramps and nausea as a result of that cramping, Buscopan might be a good option for you.  It is available in Canada without a prescription and is located behind the pharmacist’s counter.
